Hola!
Today, we had the chance to get a behind the scenes look at one of the main television studios in Santiago, Chile. Mega TV is a privately owned television network in Santiago. It broadcasts everything from news to soap operas to reality shows.
We had the opportunity to watch both a news show and a game show being taped and televised, which was an amazing experience because in the United States, television stations are often kept much more confidential and not as open to the public. Seeing this was definitely a new experience for a lot of us. During the news show, the reporters and the woman they were interviewing turned the camera onto us and included us in the show. This happened again during the game show as the participants tried to guess which “bucket” had money in it as opposed to water.
Through this experience, I learned a lot about the way in which media works in Chile, how it is broadcast, viewed and organized. One specific thing that I learned was that there are four news stations and they all broadcast their news at the same time. They do this so that viewers can only watch one channel at a time. This is due to the competitive nature of the media in Chile seeing as there are only a few channels. An interesting difference I noticed was that the government impacts the media in Chile while the government and the media are completely separate in the US.

After returning to our hotel, a couple of us ventured around Providencia in search of somewhere new to eat. We stumbled upon a cute area and relaxed for a couple of hours while enjoying a good lunch. Definitely a fun day full of new experiences!
